Welcome to my latest exercise in an attempt to reach my goal of being a prolific writer in 2022. So, in addition to writing 1 short story each week (Because Ray Bradbury said you can’t write 52 bad ones – challenge accepted!) I will be attempting to post an original poem each day in April. This is not going to be easy – I’ve not really written poetry since college. So, these will be thrown together each day and not very edited.

I can hear you now – sucky stories and bad poetry? Sign me up.

Joy Jam

Horns sound bright
(not to mention the flash in the stage lights)
they lead the saxes, the rhythm section
up a mountain, then all cascade into fullness of notes
lifting our hears, our spirits with
a joy jam

The tenor sax stands
expectation rises as he flexes his fingers over the keys
and then the band backs off
letting the tenor explore new places
take us away from our days, our work, our duty
There is only now
There is only the music
This note, this phrase, this breath
joy jam

They say art is how
we decorate space
And music is how
we decorate time
But the joy jam
makes us live today
now
in the present.
