The edges of this morning’s full moon
are softened
The dust of the Sahara desert
traveling across the ocean
to make my sky
a hazy, blurry, brown
instead of a clear bright blue.

I want to ask the dust
How??
How does mere dust travel across the mighty Atlantic
and not become sludge?
What witchcraft keeps the dust
high and dry?
What wind blows so steady and strong
pushing, pushing the dust
across all those miles?

I want to ask the dust
Why?
Why come so far, so fast?
Is it to visit
the dust beings that once graced Africa
only to come to our shores
on another type of ill wind?
for we are, it is said
only dust in the wind ourselves.
